Article: Espiritu at the International Folk Art Market: Celebrating Mexican Craftsmanship in Santa Fe
Every journey begins with a story, and this July, ours led us to the International Folk Art Market (IFAM) in Santa Fe, New Mexico.
Known as the world’s largest international folk art market, IFAM brings together master artisans from across the globe to celebrate handmade traditions, cultural heritage, and the power of craftsmanship. For the Espiritu team, it was more than an event—it was a reminder of why we started this brand in the first place.
A Place Where Craftsmanship Speaks Every Language
Walking through the market felt like traveling the world without ever leaving Santa Fe. Every booth told a different story through handwoven textiles, intricate embroidery, carved wood, ceramics, jewelry, and leatherwork.
Despite coming from different countries and cultures, every artisan shared something in common: a commitment to preserving techniques passed down through generations.
At Espiritu, we believe that’s exactly what makes handmade products so meaningful. They aren’t simply designed—they’re crafted with patience, purpose, and history.
Representing Mexico Through Handmade Sandals
As a Mexican brand, being part of IFAM was incredibly special.
Mexico has one of the richest artisan traditions in the world, and we were proud to represent that heritage through our handcrafted leather sandals. Every pair of Espiritu sandals is made by skilled artisans using techniques that value quality over quantity and timeless design over fast-changing trends.
Sharing our work with visitors from around the world reminded us that authentic craftsmanship has a universal language. People don’t just appreciate beautiful products—they appreciate knowing the hands and stories behind them.
Why Slow Fashion Matters
In today’s world, it’s easy to forget how much time, skill, and care goes into making something by hand.
The International Folk Art Market celebrates the opposite of mass production. It shines a light on makers who dedicate their lives to preserving traditional techniques while supporting their local communities.
That philosophy aligns perfectly with ours.
At Espiritu, we embrace slow fashion because we believe buying less—but buying better—is one of the most meaningful choices we can make. We create sandals designed to become wardrobe staples, crafted from natural leather and made to last season after season.
More Than a Market
One of the most inspiring parts of IFAM wasn’t only the incredible craftsmanship—it was the conversations.
Meeting fellow artisans, collectors, designers, and people who genuinely value handmade work reminded us that craftsmanship continues to thrive because people choose to support it.
Every purchase becomes part of a larger story—one that helps preserve traditions, sustain artisan communities, and ensure these skills continue for future generations.
Bringing the Inspiration Home
We returned from Santa Fe feeling inspired, grateful, and more connected than ever to our mission.
Every collection we create is rooted in the same values we saw celebrated throughout IFAM: authenticity, heritage, quality, and respect for the people behind every handmade piece.
To everyone who visited us, shared our story, or simply stopped to admire the craftsmanship—thank you.
And to our artisans in Mexico, thank you for making it possible to carry a piece of our culture wherever we go.
We’ll continue creating timeless handmade sandals with the hope that every pair tells a story worth walking in.
